The Canada Carbon Tax Rebate, now officially known as the Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR), helps Canadians deal with the cost of carbon pricing. In 2025, you'll receive this money in four payments throughout the year, with amounts varying depending on where you live and your family size.
For many families, these quarterly payments can add up to over $1,000 annually, making it a decent amount in terms of extra income.
In this guide, we’re going to take a look at things like when to expect your payments in 2025, how much you'll get, and what to do if there's a problem with your rebate.
The Canada Carbon Tax Rebate (CCR) is a government program that gives money back to Canadians to help with higher costs caused by carbon pricing.
Think of it as getting a refund (or at least, a partial refund) on the extra money you spend because of the carbon tax on things like gas and heating fuel.
The government collects carbon tax from companies that produce greenhouse gases, and instead of keeping this money, their goal is to give it back to households through these rebate payments.
According to the Canadian government, eight out of ten families get back more money than they spend on the carbon tax.
The Canada Carbon Rebate is paid every three months in 2025, starting with the Canada carbon rebate in January 2025. Here are the expected Canada Carbon Tax Rebate Dates for 2025:
January 15, 2025
April 15, 2025
July 15, 2025
October 15, 2025
If any of these dates fall on a weekend or holiday, you'll get your payment on the last business day before the scheduled date. Also, while these are the expected dates, they’re always subject to last minute changes.
If your payment doesn't arrive when expected, you may definitely feel a bit stressed, especially if you were expecting to use that cash right away. But don’t panic, there’s usually an explanation and solution.
Direct deposits can take up to 5 business days to appear in your account, while cheques can take up to 10 business days to arrive by mail (hence why direct deposits are always the better option).
If you still haven't received your payment after this waiting period, here's what to do:
Check your CRA My Account online to confirm your payment was issued
Make sure the CRA has your current address or banking information
If everything looks correct but you still don't have your payment, call the CRA after the waiting period
The fastest way to reach the CRA is to call early in the morning when their phone lines open at 8:00 AM local time, because they get far busier later in the day, which could lead to much longer hold times. Have your Social Insurance Number ready when you call, and they'll help track down your missing payment.
The amount of your Canada Carbon Rebate depends on where you live, how many people are in your family, and whether you live in a rural area. Each province gets different amounts because carbon pricing impacts vary across Canada.
Here's what you'll receive each quarter in 2025 (amounts are subject to change):
Ontario: Single adult: $150 Couple: $225 Each child: $75 Rural supplement: Extra 10% | Alberta: Single adult: $175 Couple: $262.50 Each child: $87.50 Rural supplement: Extra 10% |
Saskatchewan: Single adult: $170 Couple: $255 Each child: $85 Rural supplement: Extra 10% | Manitoba: Single adult: $132 Couple: $198 Each child: $66 Rural supplement: Extra 10% |

You don't need to fill out any special forms for the Carbon Rebate. As long as you file your income tax return each year, the CRA automatically calculates your rebate and sends it to you.
Just make sure you file your taxes on time, even if you had no income in 2024. Your payments for 2025 will be based on your 2024 tax return.
To receive the Carbon Rebate, you must
Be a resident of Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, or Alberta.
Be at least 19 years old (or live with a spouse, parent, or child), and you must file your tax return, even if you had no income.
Live in Canada, and either be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, protected person, or temporary resident who has lived here for 18 months.
If you live outside of a major city or metropolitan area, you might qualify for the 10% rural supplement. The CRA automatically determines this based on your address - you don't need to apply separately.
Even if you don't owe any taxes or have no income, you can still get the full Carbon Rebate. Again, you need to file your tax return - this is how the CRA knows where to send your money and how much you’re eligible to receive. The rebate isn't based on your income level, so everyone who's eligible gets the same base amount for their family size and location.
You can receive your Carbon Rebate in two ways: direct deposit or cheque. But if you want your money sent to you as quickly as possible, direct deposit is both the more faster and secure way of doing so. Otherwise, you'll get a cheque in the mail, which can take up to 10 business days to arrive (assuming there are no mail delays, of course).
Setting up direct deposit is easy and you can do it in three ways:
Through CRA My Account:
Sign in to your CRA My Account
Look for "Direct deposit" under "Profile and settings"
Enter your banking information (must be from a Canadian bank account)
Click "Submit" to save your changes

If you don't have a CRA My Account, it’s super easy to sign up online using your bank account login or by requesting a security code by mail. You can also call the CRA to check your payment status, but wait times on the phone can be long, especially near payment dates.
Remember to keep your contact and banking information up to date with the CRA to avoid any payment delays. If you move or change bank accounts, update your information right away through My Account or by calling the CRA.
